  1. Fwd: [SDBIRDS] Curlew Sandpiper, 22 Jan. 2013 LINK
    DATE: Jan 22, 2013 @ 7:31pm, 4 month(s) ago
I was in the area so chased the Curlew Sandpiper reported by Brennan
Mulrooney at the N end of 7th in Imperial Beach. The tide was low so
most shorebirds were out on the bay but there were small groups of
Leasts, Westerns, and Dunlins foraging in the channels immediately north
of 7th. As I was getting ready to leave (even thinking the text message
was some glitch resending a message from last summer) the CUSA popped
its head out from directly at the end of 7th. There is enough of a slope
at low tide that any shorebirds on the south bank of the southern-most
channel are not visible from the bike path.

Just when I was thinking that storm-driven birds at La Jolla Cove were more
quantity than quality along came this mega! It flew in several times over
the close-to-shore kelp bed before heading off southwards. I was
seawatching at the time but it was sheer luck that I noticed it by naked
eye while talking to a visiting tourist from Minnesota! I pointed the
Canon 7D at it faster than you can believe.

Today while working on Camp Pendleton, I located a juvenile Wood Sandpiper.
Photos taken with my phone (digiscoped) can be seen on my Flickr page:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/langooney/Andrew Fisher and Jimmy McMorran (both
conducting surveys with me today) were probably able to get better photos with
their DSLR's and maybe they will post their photos as well.

Unfortunately, unlike Lake O'Neill, the spot where this bird was found cannot
accommodate large numbers of visiting birders and we have been instructed by
base authorities to not share the location. I certainly wish this weren't the
case and I know this news will make many people unhappy, but it's not my call
and I'm not about to go against their wishes. Hopefully this will serve to
inspire you to get out to your nearest siberian shorebird habitat and find out
what other great birds are passing through.

This morning (Thurs, Aug 9) around 8:45AM, visiting birders Steve and Diane
Rose (formerly of Ventura Co., now of Nevada Co. in the Sierra Nevada)
found a RED-FACED WARBLER in the Laguna Mountains at Horse Heaven
Campground on the Sunrise Highway. Horse Heaven is just a few miles to the
northwest of Mount Laguna. They said the bird was watched for about 5
minutes in an oak tree at the bottom of the downhill in the road as one
enters the campground, just before where the road splits. The bird flew out
the back of the tree and seemingly up a slope with scattered oaks and
pines, and they spent another 1-1/2 hours trying to re-find the bird, but
with NO luck. They said it was pretty hot up there after mid-morning, and
with pretty limited bird activity--so probably the earlier one looks the
    better!!

This bird could have summered in that area so will be lingering, but it
could also be a migrant--Red-faced Warblers are early fall migrants and are
already on the move now--and may never be seen again....

  15. Summer Season Reports for North American Birds LINK
    DATE: Aug 1, 2012 @ 6:23pm, 10 month(s) ago
    County Recorders/Contributors:

The Summer Season (June and July 2012) is ended, and we solicit
reports for inclusion in the Southern California Region of NORTH AMERICAN
BIRDS. Reports should be arranged with species in the taxonomic order
followed by the American Ornithologists Union (Check-List of North American
Birds 1998) and the American Birding Association (7th edition of the ABA
Checklist, 2009). Reports of species included on the California Bird
Records Committee (CBRC) review list (Field List of California Birds 2009,
obtainable through Western Field Ornithologists at 1359 Solano Drive,
Pacifica, CA 94044 http://www.californiabirds.org must be accompanied by
documentation (written description, photographs, etc.). Similar
    documentation
should also accompany reports of species unusual for the location or season.
Full names, with all initials, should be used in the reports (this reduces
    the
potential for different observers having the same initials, and makes it
    simpler to acknowledge contributors).

Reports should be sent to the appropriate County Recorders (listed below)
or directly to Guy McCaskie. Reports for this season must be received prior
to 22 August 2012. NORTH AMERICAN BIRDS can not exist without your input.

    Hi Birders,

The Mississippi Kite found this morning by Paul Marvin continued at least
until 1050; however it was absent for much of the time. It was
generally flying high in the sky foraging on dragonflies. The kite seems to
be covering a large area and difficult to detect. It was last being seen
from the parking area. A very cropped image of the kite in flight can be
seen at the following link. http://www.flickr.com/photos/35283997@N07/

    DATE: Jan 23, 2012 @ 5:33pm, 1 year(s) ago
    Hi Darrell and all,

I apologize for not posting to Calbirds in addition to our local lists. The bird
showed exceptionally well on Sunday 22 for about 100 birders and there was a
report of the bird showing well this morning also. Wednesday would not be a good
mid-week day because it is a hunt day.

I was there only the one day and others have been there most everyday so will
know more. My impression is that this bird is not shy and may even prefer to eat
it's prey in the company of birders as it seemed to get less harassment from the
Peregrine and others by doing so. Anthropomorphism I know but.... It actually
flew to what seems to be its favorite pole to eat an American Coot with a small
group of people already near there and much traffic going by at the time. It was
also seen rising on a thermal and soaring above the small hill behind HQ with
several Common Raven and Red-tailed Hawk. The first time it was seen that
morning it had been on a pole for about ten minutes when it took off at the
sound of a distant gunshot from the waterfowl hunt club to the south. My
impression was that it flew, not because of pressure from photographers and the
sound of the gunshot, although there was some of both, but because it already
had prey in sight. When it flew it made a straight shot at and tried to grab an
American Coot which it did not hold onto. It then perched in a tree and was
immediately mobbed by a Northern Harrier before heading low and north. Others
saw it make an attempt at another coot to the north just before it returned
south to the original location. It did make a successful grab of a coot a few
minutes later with a large delighted crowd watching nearby.

Will the bird stay? If I knew that answer I would have known the winning lotto
    numbers as well.

Following is what I posted to inlandcountybirds and SDBirds. The post does not
contain exact viewing directions such as it prefers "pole x" but I am sure that
Chris, Chet, myself and many others will be most happy to pass on that
    information off list.

    Hi all,

Great fun over the weekend! Sunrise at SJWA was spectacular and I had one Barn
Owl when I arrived about 5:30 just to enjoy a sunrise like that. Got to see the
star attraction Gyrfalcon of course. It was overcast yet calm and in the high
30's maybe. There were 60 to 70 birders present when the bird first appeared at
8:05 to 8:15. More birders were arriving and numerous had moved on when the bird
showed again at 9:15 so I would estimate the number of birders present as much
closer to 100. I remained in the parking lot most of the time and had really
great scope looks at the bird every time it showed but no real photo
    opportunity.

I did not see the Gyrfalcon take the coot but did get to watch it in the scope
when it carried it off to a far power pole where a Peregrine Falcon had been
most of the morning. The Peregrine made numerous passes at the Gyrfalcon en
route and it was then that I first had a true appreciation for the actual size
of this bird because it really gave the impression of an American Kestrel
passing at a Peregrine Falcon!! I figured it would stay on that far pole to eat
the coot so that was when we decided to go look for the Sage Thrasher reported
previously. The ultimate however was when I was on the way to the other spot and
realized Steve and Pete had car trouble. I stopped to offer assistance and the
bird flew right by us and landed on the next pole to consume the American Coot
and I was able to stick my camera out the window and just look up! AAA had just
arrived at the same moment and I bet he thought he had wondered into the
    Twilight Zone!

Later, as a few of us were up a hillside to the west looking at Rufous-crowned
Sparrow and such, Howard quipped that with my luck the falcon would probably
follow me. It was only a few minutes later when we spotted the Gyrfalcon soaring
almost above us with Common Ravens and a Red-tailed Hawk! Too much fun!

I put up a video of the Gyrfalcon feeding on the Coot. It can be viewed at
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gpyTNYfRhqA

  29. Worm-eating Warbler, Imperial County 11-26-11 LINK
    DATE: Nov 26, 2011 @ 4:17pm, 1 year(s) ago
    Hi all,

The following was posted to inlandcountybirds and SDBirds but as an afterthought
it dawned on me that being a county record it should also be posted to Calbirds
so here it is! A Worm-eating Warbler is at Ramer Lake. Directions and more
    below.

    Hi all,

10:15am. Just got a call from Mark Jorgensen who got a call from Sacramento
birder Craig Swolgaard who is currenty looking at a WROM-EATING WARBLER in the
large cottonwood tree above the entrance kiosk at Ramer Lake.

I am in the office in El Centro so will not be able to get out there till this
    evening :-(

Will post more when I hear it!

    Hi all,

Wait a second.... why can't I leave the office!!!!!

When I arrived at Ramer Lake, Guy McCaskie, Barbara Kraus and Cuz Wagoner were
already looking at the WORM-EATING WARBLER. Craig Swolgaard, the original finder
of the bird, came up a few minutes later and we spent an hour standing in the
same spot as the bird would appear then be gone for awhile but was still working
the same patch when we all left about 1pm. The bird favors the very large
cottonwood about 50 feet east of the east kiosk nearest to Kershaw Road and the
railroad tracks. It is in the closed fenced area but easily viewed from the
    fence with patience.

    Yellow-rumped Warbler, Orange-crowned Warbler, Ruby-crowned Kinglet and a
Blue-gray Gnatcatcher are working the trees as well.

A flock of about 150-200 MOUNTAIN PLOVER, at a long distance, flew over from the
east to the northwest which was a sweet surprise. Would not have seen them at
all had I not been glassing a distant Red-tailed Hawk and seen a mass of specks
way beyond. Fist thought was extremely distant Long-billed Curlew but we quickly
realized that they were coming at us at several hundred feet altitude and were
MUCH closer than we thought. The flashes of white undersides gave them away.

    See ya at the sea......

  31. Pinyon Jay and overall montane invasions; miscellanea LINK
    DATE: Nov 15, 2011 @ 8:29am, 2 year(s) ago

    CALBIRDS:

First some minor miscellanea: Last Thursday I visited the SD Zoo parking
lot/entrance area and central section of Balboa Park. At the Zoo the only
oriole I saw in the early AM was an adult male HOODED, undoubtedly
wintering here and probably the same bird (?) seen last month farther
inside the Zoo by Trent et al. Otherwise, just a very few Bullock's and
Western Tanagers elsewhere in the central park section near the Hall of
Nations and Palm Canyon. And yesterday--the 14th--I did a brief AM
seawatch at La Jolla, with the minor highlights being 1 Pink-footed and 300
Black-vented Shearwaters, Pom Jaeger, only 5 Common Murres, and a flock of
6 Elegant Terns heading south (getting close to the typical departure date
for that species). A nice flight of loons and scoters.

Recent discussions on SDBirds and in the field have emphasized this fall's
wonderful Pinyon Jay incursion in to San Diego County and what it means for
other montane species, and how it relates to the distribution of Pinyon
Pines in the county. As for a grander montane invasion: there isn't one!!
This is the ONLY site with wandering Pinyon Jays; no other corvids appear
to be on the move anywhere (although Barbara and I did have a single very
wayward Steller's Jay at a lowland desert oasis in s. Nevada a few weeks
    ago--my first Steller's ever at a desert oasis--so even if there isn't a
'flight' going on, a few odd things can occur). The flight of Mountain
Chickadees and even Oak Titmice seems to be largely restricted to San Diego
County (and to 100 yards inside Imperial County!). It appears that almost
NO other montane birds are moving this year in the West. There has been a
tiny sprinkling of single Pine Siskins scattered about. Western and
Mountain Bluebirds are occurring here and there to places which suggest a
bit of a movement. But that may be about it. A few exceptions, of course,
    but nothing large-scale.

As for Pinyon Jay habitat needs--and where our SD birds may have
originated--the closest populations to San Diego County are just to the
south in the northern mountains of Baja or just to the north in the Garner
Valley area of the San Jacinto Mtns in Riverside County. In both these
areas the birds frequent JEFFREY Pine, not Pinyon Pine. And that's exactly
what they are being seen in at the mile-marker 28 area on Sunrise Highway,
and it is presumably also the dominant pine at Stonewall Mine. Yes, many
Pinyon Jays from elsewhere in the species' range are from areas dominated
by Pinyon Pine, although many other populations frequent large expanses of
Ponderosa Pine (e.g., in northern AZ). Whether 'invading' birds necessarily
prefer the same species of pine in which they normally frequent is
    uncertain--or at least I don't have a clue.

that it was an Annas. No need to keep shooting the messenger here.

This is why the word "Possible" was thrown in, the 3-4 people who saw the

    Bob,

We have a similar problem here in San Diego County with Cabrillo National
Monument, and somewhat with Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery.
Rules for birding are established by one group, and the rest of the world has no
clue what was agreed to. With over 1500 SDBirds members (more members than
actual number of birders in the County). People are still unaware of the
agreements and rules that were made for those locations.

Calbirds has almost 2300 members, KernCoBird has just over 370 members, and with
the messages going out world-wide via other outlets, this doesn't mean all
bird-watchers, birders,& tour groups are paying attention to these messages and
these rules that were sent out via these groups.

While I'm truly appreciative that Silver Saddles does still allow for birders to
go out there, maybe a suggestion of, them putting up a sign at the entrance,
telling birders what their rules are. Maybe the Kern County Audubon (if there is
one) can even pay for the signage. This way, no one can say, that they did not
    know the rules.

    Just a suggestion,

    Hi all,

Got a call from an Ohio birder who said the bird came in a bit closer to the
road this morning in the typical spot of the past few days.

I have been after our local newspaper, the Imperial Valley Press, to run
something, anything, on this bird since Wednesday morning the day after it was
origionaly found by Al Kalin. They deemed it un-newsworthy!? Yesterday morning,
Wednesday Nov. 17, Julio Moreno met us at the site at 6am and did a piece.
Although the editors of IVP still do not think it is news worthy of printing in
our paper they did let this young man do a video that is now posted on their
website and is on You Tube. I first saw it a little bit ago. Thought he did a
good job but the one part that got edited out that I thought most significant
for the Imperial Valley in the first place was that the bird was first
identified and reported by a most respected member of our valley Al Kalin! There
is supposed to be an edit of the video to put that back in. A link to the video
can be found on the Imperial Valley Press Facebook page at this link.

That's a very interesting observation and valuable
correlation with the literature. However, we should
probably keep in mind that this individual has already
demonstrated that behaviorally it's a little odd.
Maybe he's always had a hard time keeping up with
others of his own species too, and that's why he missed
